Makeup Bag - Cosmetic Case Tutorial

Makeup Bag - Cosmetic Case Tutorial
Cosmetic Cases are the perfect gift for sleepovers, stocking stuffers, teachers, co-workers, bunco friends, bridesmaids and even “the woman that has everything!” These easy cases are quick to make with very little fabric cost to you. Monogram, add trims or make cute fabric flowers to accessorize your cosmetic case.
3 cases in two fat quarters? Yes, it can be done! Here is how!

Materials:
2 fat Quarters
1 piece of interfacing measuring 18” X 22”
3- 9” multipurpose zippers (plastic teeth)
invisible ink marker

Step 1:

Iron the interfacing onto the outer shell fabric. Divide the fabric into 6 sections. Each section measures 6”h X 11”w.

Take 2 outer shell panels measuring 6”hX11”w and 2 lining panels 6”hX11”w. Set aside the rest of the fabric.

We will make one case in steps 2-10. You can make all 3 cases at the same time or one at a time. Here is how!

Step 2:

Layer the outer shell fabric right side up, 9” zipper facing down and the lining facing down. Pin all of the layers in place. Place your zipper foot onto the sewing machine and sew the three layers together.

Open up the sewn layers and press the fabric away from the zipper. Open the two sides of the Cosmetic Case, so you can see both the outer shell and the lining. Topstitch the outer shell using a 1/4” seam allowance.

Step 3:

Attach the other side of the zipper to the remaining outer shell and lining panels. Layer remaining outer shell panel right side up, zipper facing down and lining facing down. Pin all of the layers in place.

Open up the sewn layers and press the fabric away from the zipper. Topstitch the outer shell using a 1/4” seam allowance. Open zipper 6 inches as shown above right.

 Step 4:

Draw the shape of the bag.

Make two marks at the top where the zipper is located 1.5” toward the center on both sides. Then draw a straight line from your 1.5” mark to the corner of the bottom of the bag along both sides. Along the bottom edge of the bag draw a straight 1/4” line. Make sure to draw this shape on one outer shell panel and one lining panel.

Do not cut anything! Sew the trapezoid shapes you have drawn on the cosmetic case. Start at the bottom of the lining panels. Pivot your needle at the corner and sew toward the outer shell panel.  Sewing across to the outer shell side you will sew over the zipper teeth. (This is a fun adventure if this is your first time sewing a zippered bag!
After sewing over the zipper make sure that the stitches are close together. If they are not,  sew a second round of stitches over the first set again to reinforce them.)  Finish sewing around the case and stop 4” before you reach the starting point.

Step 6:

Cut 1/4” away from your sewn congruent trapezoids.

Step 7:

Reach into the cosmetic case through the opening in the lining. Pinch the corner together with the side seam and bottom seam lining up and pin in place. Do this step for all of the corners.

Step 8:

Sew across each corner 1” away for the point. Do this step for all of the corners. Clip the corners off 1/4” away from the seam allowance.

Step 9:

Turn the Cosmetic Case right side out and press the lining opening closed. Sew across the opening and iron the entire bag.
Repeat steps 2-10 with your remaining fabric from the fat quarters to make 2 more cases!

Now you have a wonderful fun gift to fill for family and friends. Cosmetic Cases are the perfect gift for sleepovers, stocking stuffers, teachers, coworkers, bunco friends, bridesmaids and even the woman that has everything.
These cases are quick to make with very little fabric cost to you and because you can make them quickly you will have more time. Monogram, add trims or make cute fabric flowers to accessorize your Cosmetic Case!
