I really like retro purses with a clasp, but to take them everywhere with me (meaning "so I can put them in my pocket when I'm walking to do two errands with the kids"), I needed a compact model.
A rounded shape, a few pleats, a small bow, and two compartments inside to separate my change from subway tickets and other ride tokens.
The two compartments:
Preparing the pleats. Here, I'm topstitching all the pleats to hold them in place because I used thick faux leather. With thick canvas, topstitching may not be necessary.
Then do the same for the last fold.
Preparing the knot. Sew the faux leather/lining rectangles together right sides together, leaving an opening on one of the short sides. Notch the corners, turn them inside out, and close them with invisible stitches. Topstitch all around. Fold the small rectangle in 3 lengthwise and make a central seam to hold the 3 layers together. Trim the seam allowance 1 mm from the seam (not yet done in the photo).
We cover one half of the rectangle intended for the interior compartment
Fold the rectangle in half, wrong sides together. Align the bottom edges of one half of the lining and the rectangle, right sides together. Sew all around, trim the excess from the rectangle and notch the rounded edges.
We prepare two pretty borders for the zipper (not essential, in my case they are not visible.) 15 cm zip. We assemble the zip, wrong side of the zip on the right side of the lining. Then right side of the imitation leather against right side of the zip. We turn and topstitch along the zip.
Join the two lining halves and the two faux leather halves together, leaving an opening in the lining (which will be closed after turning the purse inside out). CAUTION: Open the zipper completely before sewing around the edges, otherwise it won't be possible to turn the whole thing inside out.
