DIY Crochet Nesting Basket Tutorial

DIY Crochet Nesting Basket Tutorial

These simple baskets are easier than they look - the Eyelash stitch motif along the sides give the effect of a woven basket and results in a super sturdy fabric. They might look a little wobbly at first, but by blocking and shaping them on a form (I used a small tin, a clean wastebasket, and a soup pot for mine), you’ll get nice, even rows.

You could really make these any size you want, but I’ve outlined a small, medium, and jumbo size.  All three baskets were made with just 2 cones of Lanyard yarn - with yarn to spare!  These hefty spools are made on an old-fashioned shoelace machine - how cool is that?! You can make the whole set and gift a bundle of nesting baskets.  Or keep them for yourself, of course!

The subtle contrast of Grey against Natural result in a very clean and classic design. I’d love to see these in some bright color combinations - Malachite & Tumeric or Peach & Marsala might have to be next on my to-do list.  You can even make them with 3 or 4 colors if you want!

MATERIALS
2 colorways Echoview Fiber Mill Lanyard Yarn
Shown in Natural and Dove Grey (one cone in each colorway will make all three bins)

TOOLS
Size N crochet hook
Large darning needle

GAUGE
Rounds 1-6 will be approximately 4-4.25” in diameter after blocking with a Size N crochet hook
*Don’t get caught up on gauge for these
- if you’re happy with the fabric you’ve made, great! If it seems too loose or too tight, adjust accordingly.

SIZE
Small (Medium, Jumbo)
Small: 5” diameter, 4” tall
Medium: 6.5” diameter, 5” tall
Jumbo: 9.5” diameter, 7” tall

CONSTRUCTION NOTES

These storage bins are quick to crochet and can easily be adapted to any size. You’ll start with a flat base, crocheted in the round, and then work straight up the sides. I’ve outlined a small, medium, and jumbo size, but if you’d like to change it up, simply crochet the round base as outlined until your approximate diameter is met, and start working up the sides with the same general formula. The eyelash stitch pattern almost resembles a woven basket, and results in a sturdy bin that could be used to hold fruit on your kitchen island, your current WIP, or a treasured houseplant. If your basket feels a little wobbly at first, do not worry! A quick block and shaping will result in nice, even stitches.
