Before we start, I think it would be helpful for you to read through the entire tutorial before you begin sewing. Up to five different fabrics may be used to make this, but I usually use three. If you read through the instructions before you begin, you can decide how many fabrics you'd like to use and where you want them placed, i.e.one fabric for the outside, one for the lining, credit card slots all one print, each one a different print, two of one print and one of another, etc.

Here's what you'll need:

1 piece of fabric 15.5" high x 9" wide - for outside of wallet (it is really best not to use directional fabric for this particular piece)
1 piece of fusible fleece (or batting of your choice) 15" high x 8.5" wide
1 piece of fabric 15.5" high x 9" wide - for lining
2 pieces of fabric 10" high x 9" wide - for zipper pouch
2 pieces of fabric 4" high x 9" wide - for two of the credit card slots
1 piece of fabric 4.75" high x 9" wide - for the third credit card slot
1 piece of fabric 2.25' high x 9" wide - for the binding
1 7" zipper
1 set - magnetic snaps
thread to match (or contrast, your choice)

Step One: Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse fleece to the wrong side of the outside piece of your wallet; set aside.

Step Two: Fold each of the three credit card slot pieces in half length wise so that you end up with two pieces that are 2" high x 9" wide and one piece that is 2 3/8" high x 9" wide. Press. Top stitch each piece across the folded top section approximately 1/4" from the top. Press to set stitches and set aside.

Step Three: Assembling the zipper pouch. Fold both fabric pieces so that you end up with two pieces that measure 5" high x 9" wide. With the head of the zipper facing to the left, center one of the 5" x 9" pieces (folded side up) onto the bottom section of the zipper tape. Using your zipper foot and sewing as close to the zipper teeth as possible, sew the bottom piece of the zipper tape to the fabric. Press.

Repeat with the top section of the zipper tape and the other 5" x 9" piece of fabric. Press. When you are finished, it should look like this:

Step Four: Assembling the credit card slots. With the zipper pouch opened up and lying flat and the zipper head facing to the left, measure down 3/4 of an inch from the bottom of the zipper and place one of your 2" x 9" credit card slots in place. Pin . Sew across the bottom raw edge at about 1/8 of an inch to secure to the pouch to the lining. Press.

Measure down 1/2 inch from the top of this card section and place the other 2" x 9" credit card slot in place. Pin and sew across the bottom raw edge at 1/8 of an inch. Press.

Measure down 1/2 inch from the top of this second card slot and place your last credit card slot, measuring 2 3/8" x 9", into place. Pin and again sew across the bottom raw edge at about 1/8 of an inch. Press. Now find the center of the credit card slots along the width (4.5 inches) and sew from bottom to top along this "line" to create divisions in your card slots. You should now have 6 credit card slots.

With right sides facing, bring the two 9" raw edges of the zipper pouch together and pin in place.

Sew along the width on top of the stitch marks from the last credit card slot.

You should now have a tube with the card slots inside. Trim bottom raw edge to within 1/4 inch from the seam line.

Using your zig zag foot, zig zag the seam allowance all the way across the 9".

Open the zipper and with the pouch still wrong side out, press the seam allowance to one side.

Turn the pouch right side out and press the seam flat. Your zipper pouch and credit card slots are now finished.

Step Five: Assembling the lining. Take your lining piece and measure down 4 inches from the top. Place your completed zipper pouch on your lining at this measurement and pin into place, making sure all four corners are straight.

Using about 1/8 of an inch seam, sew across the bottom of the zipper pouch/credit card section to secure the pouch to the lining. (I usually do this twice for strength.)

Now, go back up to the top of the lining (you are still on the right side of the fabric) and find the center of the width (4.5 inches). Measure down 1.5" and mark with a dot.

Take one of the washers from your magnetic snap set and put the center hole over the dot. Make a mark in each of the side slots. Then using your seam ripper, cut through these marks, being careful not to cut too far! Take the male end of your magnetic snap and push through from the front to the back side of the lining. Be sure to put a piece of batting or plastic canvas over the prongs before you put on the washer (this will help keep your snap from going through your fabric with repeated use). Press the prongs in.

Now take your outer fabric and, with the right side up, find the center across the width (4.5 inches) and then measure up 5 inches from the bottom of the fabric and mark with a dot. Follow the procedure above to install the female portion of your snap. Press the prongs in. Your outer piece and lining are now ready to be assembled.

Step 6: Assembling the wallet: Lay the outer fabric on your work surface with the right side facing up. Lay your lining piece over it with the right side down. Align the top, bottom and sides and pin in place. Starting from the bottom right corner (as the bottom faces away from you) and using a 3/8 inch seam allowance, sew up one side...

...pivot and sew across the top, then pivot again and sew down the other side, leaving the entire bottom open for turning. Trim the top corners and press your seams open; turn right side out and gently push out your top corners. Align your seams and press well.

Take your binding strip and fold in half lengthwise so you have a piece that measures 1 1/8 " x 9". Press. Unfold and fold one raw edge to the middle and press really well. Do the same with the other side.

Unfold and with right sides together, place one edge of the binding across the width of the bottom opening of the wallet, lining up raw edges (the binding will be approximately 1/2 inch longer on each end than the wallet.

Sew along the crease from one side to the other. Press.

Turn the binding up and bring over to the inside of the wallet. Fold in the extra pieces on each end, then fold the binding over to cover the stitch line from the front stitching. Pin in place.

At this point you can do either one of three things: Option 1 - turn the wallet back to the front and stitch in the ditch to attach the binding to the wallet; Option 2 - turn the wallet back over to the front and stitch very close to the edge of the binding to catch the binding on the back; or Option 3 - sew the binding on the back by hand. (I usually do option number 1 or 2.) Here I "stitched in the ditch" except I didn't stay in the ditch! I told you it was late and I was tired...that's my story and I'm sticking to it! =:o) Plus, that fabric is so bold it just about put my eyes out!!

Now, fold the bottom up about 3.25 inches on the inside of the wallet to form the receipt pocket. Press and then pin into place.

Turn the wallet over to the front and beginning on your right side where the receipt pocket meets the lining section, begin top stitching 1/4 inch from the sides. (Back stitch a couple of times to insure that the seam holds together well on each side where the receipt pocket is.)

Sew all the way around the wallet and back stitch when you get back to your starting point. Fold the wallet up, snap closed and press the folds to crease. Your wallet is finished! Enjoy.
