Puff or Biscuit Quilt Tutorial

Puff or Biscuit Quilt Tutorial

Puff quilting, named for its shape like a cute little bread, many people also call it a bun cushion ~~

Puff quilting can be applied in large such as mattresses, window cushions, floor cushions ...... small made into cushions, insulating cushions== It can also be applied in bags, baskets and other quilting works. Before making a puff quilting piece, determine the size of the entire piece and then calculate the size of the individual puffs.

Individual puffs can be sized large or small, for example, for the same size square mat, you can have the puffs arranged 7 x 7 or 8 x 8 etc. Whether the piece is square or rectangular, the individual puffs must be square.

Once you have determined the size of the individual puffs and the number of puffs you need, you can cut the cloth you need~~~.

A puff needs a backing cloth and a surface cloth, the backing cloth is not visible after the work is finished, so you can choose any cloth to do, but the size of the backing cloth must be cut accurately, its edge length = the net edge length of the puffs + 2 seam allowances.

The surface cloth is wider than the base cloth, and the wider part is used to make pleats, and it is also because of the pleats that the surface cloth will bulge up to give the appearance of a puff. Usually the side length of the sheet = the side length of the backing + (2~3cm), the wider the sheet, the more the puffs will bulge. The surface is the surface of the puff, you can choose several same color or contrasting color cloth to make, here I chose purple and green two contrasting colors~~

I will explain the process of making a puff mat consisting of 779 puffs as an example.

1. Cut 49 pieces of 6.5cm x 6.5cm backing fabric, 25 pieces of 9cm x 9cm green fabric, and 24 pieces of purple fabric. 2.

2. Cut a slit diagonally through each piece of backing fabric, through which the cotton will be stuffed into the puffs at the end. 3.

3. Make a pleat mark on each piece of fabric. For the convenience of marking, we can cut a piece of paper the same size as the tablecloth, draw two center lines on it, and then the pleated amount (that is, the tablecloth is wider than the length of the backing cloth) is divided into two and divided equally on both sides of the center line to make a mark, and in the marking of the triangular teeth, so that we can overlap a number of layers of cloth cloth aligned on the top of the paper pattern, and then the paper pattern of the teeth of the paper pattern position in the cloth cloth to cut a small Cutting the cloth at the location of the paper pattern's notches.

4. Sew the tablecloth and the backing fabric together. With the back of the fabric and the backing fabric attached to each other and one of the corners aligned, start sewing on the top of the fabric, with the width of the seam narrower than the width reserved, and with the two pleats facing outward.

After sewing one edge, continue to pleat and sew the second edge until the circle is complete.

5. After sewing all the individual puffs, sew them together in groups of 7 to form a row, now with the same seam allowance.

6. Sew them together in rows to form a single piece→

According to the usual practice, you should now fill each puff with cotton, but the pads will become very heavy after filling with cotton, and the later piping and lining operations will be difficult. So let's adjust the order of production and do other things first. Another characteristic of puff quilting is that after filling with cotton, the puff mat will shrink and wrinkle when it is opened up by the cotton, so the traditional method of piping the edges will be uneven and wavy, which is not very beautiful. Instead of piping the edges, we can add ruffles to the puff pads.

7. Cut the ruffles. The ruffles are made in two layers, I cut the total width to 10 centimeters (you can adjust the width yourself). The ruffles should be pleated, if you want the pleats to be one next to the other, then the length of the fabric cloth should be the circumference of the mat x 3 ,if the fabric cloth is not long enough, you can space the pleats a bit.

8. We also need to cut a piece of backing fabric for the entire mat, the size of which is equal to the size of the mat, the backing fabric should be cut into 2 pieces, and then sew the ends of the center seam, leaving a large opening in the middle for the return.

9. First, sew the ruffles around the edges of the puff pads, starting and ending the ruffles at a distance and leaving a corresponding length for seams and pleats. The corners should be sewn in a curved line, and the pleats should be denser here→.

Sew the ends of the ruffles together, iron the seam allowances on both sides, and then finish the ruffles by pleating between the original start and end points.

10. Now lay the backing fabric over the top of the puff pad and sew a circle along the perimeter →

11. Turn the puff cushions inside out. Now we are going to stuff each puff with padding, and when it is full, sew the opening in the back of the puff. Once all the puffs have been filled, finish by sewing the return opening to the bottom of the puff pad with a hidden stitch.

Tips

Puff pad filling cotton must choose a good resilience of the filling cotton, otherwise the puffs are flattened and not full will be very ugly Oh ~ ~ ~
