How to Make a Sewing Machine PinCushion

How to Make a Sewing Machine Pin Cushion

Sewing a pincushion for your sewing machine? Say what? It might sound a bit strange at first, but I’ve discovered that a sewing machine pincushion is incredibly practical.

It’s not that I don’t already own pincushions—I do—but I constantly find my fabric snagging on the wrist-worn pincushion I use. And while my magnetic pincushion does a great job of attracting pins, things get messy when they all end up scattered haphazardly across the surface, leading me to prick my fingers repeatedly. That can get pretty annoying over time.

So, I needed a new solution: a simple, sewn pincushion that sits right within my immediate workspace—one that’s space-efficient, stays firmly in place, and doesn’t pose any risk of accidental pricks.

Are you familiar with the various little (and not-so-little) dilemmas that come with using sewing pins? If so, why not sew your own pincushion designed specifically for your sewing machine?

Materials
Fabric scraps
Ruffled trim or piping
Sewing pins, fabric scissors
Sewing machine
Optional: bias tape maker
Stuffing (fiberfill)
KAM snap

Step 1: First, measure the area where the pincushion will sit on your sewing machine. Add a seam allowance to all sides. For example, my rectangles are 11 cm x 7 cm. Also, measure the length needed for the fastening straps. My straps are 4 cm wide.

Step 2: Pin the ruffled trim all the way around the right side of the first rectangle, with the ruffles facing inward. Then, sew the ruffled trim in place.

Step 3: Take the fastening strips and shape them into bias tape.

Step 4: Unfold one end of each bias tape, fold about 1 cm inward, and then fold the outer edges back toward the center. Press the ends with an iron.

Step 5: Fold the bias tape in half lengthwise once more and press along the edge.

Step 6: Join the strips together using a straight stitch or a decorative stitch.

Step 7: Pin the ribbons in place on the short sides—one on the left and one on the right.

Step 8: Roll up the ribbons; this prevents the long ends from getting sewn in.

Step 9: Place the rectangles with their right sides together and sew them together. Leave an opening along the bottom long side for turning the piece right side out.

Step 10: Now turn everything right side out.

Step 11: Stuff the pincushion with polyester fiberfill.

Step 12: Close the opening used for turning the piece right-side out using a ladder stitch (invisible stitch).

Step 13: Finally, attach the Kam snap to the straps.

And there you have it—your little helper is all finished. A quick-to-make pincushion that is sure to bring a smile to your face.

I hope you enjoyed my little pincushion DIY project and that you’ll be happy with the result.
