How To Make Fabric Flowers

How To Make Fabric Flowers

I’ve put together a short tutorial for you on how to sew a pretty fabric flower. You can use a flower like this in many different ways: as a brooch, attached to a headband or hair tie, as an eye-catching detail on a bag... the only limit is your imagination!

 Creating a Pattern

First, draw a template for the flower petals. To do this, draw a straight line, then draw a vertical line extending upward from the center of that line. Next, draw an arc starting from the right end of the bottom line, curving up over the top of the vertical line, and ending at the left end of the bottom line. Cut out the shape—your template is now ready. For a variation, you could also design a petal that tapers to a point at the top!

Cutting the Fabric

Next, use your template to trace 12 petals onto the wrong side (the back) of the fabric, then cut them out.

Stitching

Now, place two petals together, right sides facing, and stitch along the edge. I did not include a seam allowance in my template. You could certainly include one, but if you do, you should trim some of the excess fabric afterward so that the petals don’t end up looking bulky or lumpy.

Finishing the edges

Turn the petals right side out and press them until they are smooth. Then, finish the bottom edge using a zigzag or overlock stitch.

Threading

Now, thread the leaf. It is best to use a double strand of thread for this; insert the needle into the leaf from underneath. The thread should also be brought back out through the bottom at the end of the flower. I have highlighted the thread in red so that it is easier to see.

Gathering and Knotting

Once all the petals have been threaded on, gather the flower together. To do this, hold the thread firmly at one end and slide the petals along until everything is nicely ruffled. Finally, tie the thread securely in a knot.

Finishing

To finish, sew a button onto the center. I used a fabric-covered button here, but it also looks very nice with a regular button.

Well then, I hope you have fun sewing this yourself!
