How to Make a Small Wallet. DIY mini wallet/card holder. Free Sewing Tutorial.
materials:
Sewing machine, chalk, thread, needles, rulers, etc.
Three fabric strips measuring 4.5 x 8 inches / approx. 11.5 x 20.5 cm (for the outer and inner lining and the coin pocket);
one fabric strip measuring 4 x 8 inches / approx. 10.5 x 20.5 cm (for the bill compartment);
one fabric strip measuring 3.5 x 8 inches / approx. 9 x 20.5 cm (for the card slots);
two fabric strips measuring 2.5 x 3 inches / approx. 6.5 x 8 cm (for the closure);
and a small piece measuring approx. 1.5 x 1 inch / approx. 4 x 2.5 cm (for the coin pocket);
Optional: fusible interfacing/batting;
One snap fastener and one hook-and-loop fastener
Whether you should use fusible interfacing or batting depends on the fabrics you're working with. For this wallet, I only used a thin layer of batting. The linen fabric is strong enough on its own. Okay, let's get started. I'll begin with the coin pocket:
Fold the small strip of fabric in half lengthwise with the outer side facing inwards, iron it, sew the two opposite open edges together, and turn it right side out. This creates the flap that makes opening the coin pocket easier (see below).
Fold one of the large strips of fabric in half with the outside facing inwards, iron it smooth, place the flap with the outside facing inwards deep between the two sides and sew it down about 1cm wide:
…turn right…
…sew it onto the outer fabric of the wallet
…fold over and attach button and Velcro:
First round completed! Fold the fabric of the bill and credit card pockets twice on one side and hem it…
Then place the fabric pieces on top of each other, about one centimeter apart, and sew them together at least once in the middle. (I also always sew along the sides once, so it doesn't slip so easily...)
Now sew both pieces together onto the lining fabric. The second side is finished.
(You can, of course, add more pockets.)
The closure is still missing: Iron on fusible interfacing/batting as desired and round off the edges. Then sew the two pieces of fabric together on three sides, wrong sides facing, and turn right side out.
Final step:
Place both pieces, the side with the coin pocket and the side with the card slots, wrong sides facing each other. Attach the closure, just like you did at the beginning, by placing the flap between the components…
…and sew everything together, leaving only a small opening for turning. Turn the bag right side out, hand-stitch the last few centimeters, and you're done. …Almost finished: the closure still needs its button. But then… Enjoy!
