You can quickly sew a fabric basket from a placemat and suitable fabric. The basket is not only practical, but also retains its shape thanks to the firmness of the placemat, without any additional interfacing or similar reinforcement.
Materials needed:
- 1 placemat in green ribbed knit, 33 cm wide x 48 cm long
- Cotton fabric in green, matching the placemat, 33 cm wide x 48 cm long
- Sewing thread in green
- Sewing machine and sewing supplies
Sew all pieces with a 0.7 cm seam allowance. This seam allowance is already included in the measurements.
1. Cut the fabric to the exact size of the placemat. In this case, both pieces are 33 cm wide and 48 cm long. Place the pieces right sides together and then pin them together.
2. Sew both short sides together.
3. Then place both parts on the table in front of you.
4. Pull the side seams towards the center so that both side seams lie on top of each other. Then pin both pieces together.
5. Now sew both long sides together. Leave an opening of about 10 cm on one side so you can turn the basket right side out later. But don't turn it right side out yet.
6. Cut out a 5 cm square at each corner.
7. Start with one side. Take one of the bottom corners and pull it apart.
8. The seams of the side hem and the bottom hem are placed on top of each other so that they meet exactly. Then these hems are pinned together.
9. Next, sew them together. You can then finish the seam to reinforce it. Repeat steps 1-3 for the remaining corners.
10. This is what the basket looks like now.
11. Turn the basket over.
12. Stuff one half into the other.
13. Then stitch along the top edge.
14. This is what the edge looks like afterwards.
15. Then you must close the side seam with an invisible seam (mattress stitch).
16. The basket is now finished.
17. You can fold over the edge if you want.
