How to Sew a Laptop Bag with Pockets. Easy Laptop Bag Sewing Tutorial.

 

I sewed a webbing strap onto mine so the bag can be comfortably worn over the shoulder:

So, let's get started:

You need the width, depth, and height of your notebook.
(In my case: 33 cm wide, 22 cm deep, and 2.5 cm high)

! The laptop bag consists of just two pattern pieces !

- The back panel and the front flap are made from a single piece.
- The other piece is for the inner pocket.

The dimensions I used for the back piece were: 43 x 54 cm
(Laptop width + seam allowance, and 2x laptop depth + generous seam allowance).
(Make sure to add a good 4–5 cm on the left and right sides for the width!)

Inner piece: 43 x 29 cm
(Laptop width + seam allowance, and laptop depth + seam allowance)

You need one of each of these two pieces in the outer fabric, the lining fabric, and the batting (fusible fleece).

The patch pocket on the front (for a mouse, charging cable, etc.) measures 15 x 18 cm in my version.
You need two of this piece (optionally add one layer of batting if you want the pocket to be a bit more padded/fluffy).

Then, one closure flap for the small front patch pocket: 8 x 15 cm.

You also need a piece of Velcro and a length of elastic. The elastic should be slightly wider than your back piece.

Optionally, you can add a pocket on the back (for documents, etc.).
(Laptop width + seam allowance; height as desired)

Here is an overview of the required pieces:

We begin with the closure flap. Sew it together—right sides facing—along one short side and the long side:

It should then look like this:

Trim the corners slightly, then turn it right side out and sew on the soft part of the Velcro fastener:

Then topstitch the three sides close to the edge. Leave the opening for turning unstitched:

Now sew the hook side of the Velcro strip across one piece of the small pocket. The Velcro should be centered and positioned about 2–3 cm down from the top edge. 

Next, sew the small pocket pieces together, right sides facing, leaving a small opening for turning:

Trim the corners diagonally again before turning the bag right side out, then topstitch the upper edge with a decorative stitch.

The small pocket is now sewn onto the outer fabric of the inner section—again, centered and positioned approximately 5–6 cm down from the top edge. This step also closes the turning opening.

Now it’s time for the tab. Sew it close to the edge along the top rim:

Now place the fusible fleece under the outer fabric of the inner section, and lay the lining fabric over it, right sides together. Then, simply sew along the top edge:

The whole thing should now look like this:

Topstitch close to the edge along the top edge. The tab should face outwards, as shown in the photo:

The part is finished for now and can be set aside:

Now for the outside. Decorate it as you wish:

Then sew the elastic (Velcro could also be used as an option) firmly in place on the left and right, spaced about 4–5 cm apart (I laid the elastic quite loosely across the entire width). Trim off the excess ends:

Now attach the optional document pocket to the back. Topstitch close to the edge along the top edge:

Sew the fuzzy part of the Velcro strip onto the inside:

Determine the position for the mating part of the Velcro strip on the underside of the outer section and sew on the Velcro fastener:

Right, now it’s time to sew everything together! Place the batting at the bottom, then the outer fabric (including the document pocket) right-side up; on top of that, place the inner pocket right-side down—see the photo:

And then the lining fabric, right side down:

Now sew everything together all the way around. Leave a generous opening for turning on the side (ideally just below the elastic casing):

Now carefully turn the whole piece right side out, push out the corners well, and topstitch close to the edge of the flap only, closing the turning opening in the process:

So, girls, you won't believe it, but you've done it!!! Your laptop bag is FINISHED!!!! :-D
