Dimensions in my example:
Height (unfolded): approx. 19 cm
Height (folded): approx. 14 cm
Folded cuff height: approx. 5 cm
Width: approx. 20 cm
Depth: approx. 12 cm
Cutting:
4 identical pieces → 2 from outer fabric and 2 from lining (oilcloth)
My experience: If the lining is oilcloth, even thin outer fabrics do not need interfacing; otherwise,
reinforce the inner and outer fabrics with interfacing (e.g., Vlieseline) as desired.
Cut out all four pieces identically:
2 x outer fabric (turquoise with a pattern in my example)
2 x lining fabric (pink oilcloth in my example)
If you use regular cotton fabric for the lining instead of oilcloth, it is recommended to reinforce the outer fabric with interfacing.
Place one outer fabric piece and one lining piece right sides together and sew them along the top edges (green line). I chose a stitch that finishes the edge at the same time, but a standard straight stitch can also be used.
Repeat this process with the other two pieces.
You now have two identical pieces.
Lay them out and place the two pieces together, right sides facing (aligning the outer fabric with the outer fabric and the lining with the lining).
In the photo, the top left section is folded back only for demonstration purposes so you can see
how the pieces should be aligned - please align the pieces so they lie flush against each other across their entire surface.
Sew along the side edges (black lines), leaving a turning opening on one side in either the outer fabric or the lining.
Now sew the bottom edges (blue lines) together.
That leaves the four corners. Start with any corner: pull the open edges apart and bring them back together so that the edges align (these correspond to the red lines in the diagram).
This transforms the two separate edges into one long edge—sew this edge. It is a straight seam; the "kink" visible in the photo is merely an effect of the perspective.
Repeat this step for the other three open sections.
The whole thing should now look like this…
Reach into the turning opening and turn the basket completely right side out.
It looks like this...
Insert the inner section into the outer section...
Note: If the turning opening was placed in the inner section, steps 11 and 10 must be swapped (i.e., close the turning opening first, then insert the inner section into the outer section).
At the turning opening, fold the seam allowances inward and close the opening with an edgestitched straight stitch.
Depending on your preference, you can now add a zigzag or decorative stitch to the edge.
Then fold over the edge – and you're done!
