Reversible Cadet Hap Pattern & Tutorial

This reversible cap with a (neoprene) visor is one of three outdoor outfits I'm currently making. Because the cap is adjustable at the back with a drawstring, it fits even in kindergarten and will continue to grow with your child for a long time.

You will need:

2 fabric circles with a diameter of 18.5 cm (seam allowance already included)

2 fabric strips 58 cm x 10 cm (seam allowance already included)

1 drawstring stopper with only one hole (I collect these by removing them from old clothes)

Neoprene
1 strip of ribbon, approx. 25 cm long, that looks good on both sides

1 short strip of ribbon (approx. 5 cm) or your own label

The visor template is created by folding the 18.5 cm circle inwards by 6 cm: Cut out the top part, and you have the template. Neoprene is best cut with a rotary cutter; the outer radius, in particular, should be cut without lifting the cutter, otherwise unsightly edges will result (perhaps practice on a scrap piece first...). Do not add any seam allowances. The inner radius can be cut with scissors, as it will be hidden inside the cap anyway.

Of course, you can also make the sign yourself from fabric. To do this, cut out two pieces of fabric (with seam allowance on the outer curve), reinforce one piece of fabric on the wrong side with fusible interfacing, sew right sides together on the outer curve, trim the seam allowance, turn it right side out, and topstitch close to the edge from the outside.

The fabric strips are joined together at the short sides, right sides facing, to form a ring, and then each is pinned to the corresponding fabric circles on the outside and sewn all the way around:

Turn both caps inside out, fold/iron the seam allowance into the side panel and topstitch close to the edge from the outside.

The neoprene visor is now sewn onto one of the two caps opposite the seam of the side strip (which should be at the back of the head). To do this, mark the center on the bottom edge of the strip (opposite the seam) and on the neoprene visor. 

Sew the neoprene visor to the bottom edge of the strip on the right side of the fabric. It should now look like this:

Now, place the two caps right sides together, aligning the back seams of the strips. The visor will be sandwiched between the two fabric strips and therefore no longer visible. Sew the two caps together along the bottom edge, leaving a turning opening approximately 5 cm wide about 2 cm behind the visor. 

Do not turn the cap right side out yet. Instead, take a glass or small container (approximately 8-9 cm in diameter) from the kitchen, mark a circle on the back seam that extends roughly to the center of the strip, and cut out this circle.

Now, carefully "fiddle" the ribbon between the hats so that it lies between the two layers of fabric (not on top of the hats as shown here; this picture is for demonstration purposes only!!!):

It's important to secure the ribbon above the curve with a pin so you don't sew it in. Now topstitch close to the edge of the curve. Turn it right side out; it should look like this:

Now pin the two layers of fabric together all the way around to prevent wrinkles, then topstitch all the way around the bottom edge (and along the curve). This will automatically close the turning opening. 

Fold the ribbon in half lengthwise, pull it through the cord stopper (using tweezers), and then insert the label or a piece of ribbon between the folded end. Sew the ribbon closed in this area with a small square of stitching to prevent the stopper from slipping out.
