Appliqué Clutch Purse Tutorial

Appliqué Clutch Purse Tutorial

Create this cute clutch for any girl on the go! Add appliqué for a look that’s sure to impress.

Estimated time: 2-4 hours depending on skill level and detail into appliqué.

Supplies:
Baby Lock Sewing Machine
Two 10" x 18" pieces of fabric (can be different fabrics)
Small fabric scraps (for appliqué)
Steam-A-Seam 2 ®
Dritz Fray Check ™
Baby Lock Tear-Away stabilizer

1 Button
Various colors of all-purpose thread (for appliqué)
Graph paper
Pencil
Iron and ironing board
Pressing cloth
Rotary cutter, mat and ruler
Tape measure
Scissors

Instructions:
1. Cut one 10" by 18" rectangle for the outside of the purse, and one for the lining.
2. Assign a letter for the sides of the rectangle fabric pieces: A=Short side, B=Short side, C= Both long sides.
3. Using chalk, divide the rectangle into three 6" sections on the outside of the fabric.
4. Mark the center point at end (A) for the flap. Draw lines from the previous section towards the center point (making section (A) into a triangle).

5. Fold fabric on the lines (the way the purse would fold) and iron.
For the appliqué:
6. Make a template/pattern for your appliqué pieces by drawing shapes on graph paper. Cut the templates out.

7. Lay your templates on the wrong side of the fabric scraps, then trace around them using chalk.
8. After you have traced all your desired appliqué pieces, cut them out.
9. Apply Dritz Fray Check ™ to all of the edges of the appliqué pieces and lay them on a sheet of paper to dry.

10. Using an iron-on webbing like Steam-a-Seam 2 ®, place all the appliqué pieces on the sticky webbing and cut out each piece.

11. Arrange the appliqué pieces together accordingly. Peel off the back piece of paper from the webbing and arrange them on the purse.
12. Cover the appliqué with a press cloth and set the iron to steam setting. Following the webbing directions, press with iron and hold for a few seconds.
13. Pin a piece of Tear-Away stabilizer to the back of the fabric.

14. Starting with the base of the appliqué, follow along the edge of the
appliqué using a satin stitch or zigzag stitch with settings of 2.5"-3.5"
width and .1" length.
15. After going full circle, leave a tail of thread at the end. Using a needle, pull the threads to the back side and tie together three to four times.
16. After all the appliqués are sewn, tear off the excess stabilizer.
17. Fold and iron open a 1/2” flap at end (B) and tack at the sides to
hold the flap in place.

18. Place the lining fabric on top of the purse right side to right side. Trim the point off the triangle edge, cut off about 1.5".
19. Sew the lining to the purse leaving the square side (B) open.

20. Turn right side out and iron along the outside seams.
21. Sew the open end (B) closed.
22. Fold and pin the bottom section to the middle section. Sew from one corner all the way around the purse, back stitching where the fabric flaps.

23. Mark the center point on the flap where you want the button to go using chalk (A).
24. Using the buttonhole foot, follow the foot instructions to measure and sew the hole size.
25. After the buttonhole is sewn, mark where the button will go and sew it onto the purse.
