Kid’s Bow Tie Tutorial
Supplies:
Sewing machine
All purpose polyester sewing thread
Scrap fabric
Hook and loop tape or snap
Hand needle
1. Loosely (and carefully…obviously) :) measure child’s neck and add 2 inches. This is the length of the neck band. Cut the neck band out using that measurement as the length and 2″ as the width.
2. Press the short ends in about a 1/4″. Then, press the length in half and open. Next, press the raw edges in to that center crease. You’ll then fold along the center crease so that all raw edges are concealed. I had to clip the ends on the inside because they were sticking out (as shown in the image below).
3. Stitch next to the open edges to close them to create a band.
4. Stitch hook and loop tape on opposite sides on the ends. At this point you might try it on your child’s neck to make sure the length is good and to check where the tape needs to be placed. OR, apply snap. Set aside.
5. You many need to adjust this measurement, but, I made mine for a 2 year old, so, I cut the rectangle for my bow at 5″ x 4″ (to make it about a 2″ x 3″ bow tie).
6. Fold the long side in and stitch a 1/4″ seam allowance, leaving a 1″ opening right in the center! I forgot to make my opening in the center, but, it is completely hidden if you make it right in the center (and you don’t have to stitch it closed). Then, position the seam line in the center back, as shown below and stitch the 2 sides completely with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
7. Turn right side out through your opening in the center back (see, here you can tell my opening was off to the side…center back is best).
8. Cut a 2″ square for the center of the bow.
Press one side down a 1/4″.
Press the lower edge up a 1/2″ and press the 1/4″ over the 1/2″, concealing the raw edges.
9. Now, we’re going to finish the bow!
Pinch bow in the center.
Wrap center piece around the center and tuck raw edges in. Hand stitch the center piece securely around the bow (I even anchored a couple stitches down through the bow to keep it in place).
10. Stitch bow to band in the center front. When finding the center, make sure to close band, find the center back and front from there. All done!
