Pajama Bag Tutorial

Pajama Bag Tutorial

No more nagging the kids to tidy up - we're sure they'll love stuffing their PJs inside this funny fellow. Contrasting fabrics and colourful buttons will cheer up bedtimes, and you can change the ear shape and facial expressions however you like.

Once he's finished eating all the pyjamas he can find, he'll make a fun cushion to pop on the bed. The hand strap makes him portable for sleepovers or hanging on the bedroom door, too. Let the pyjama party commence!

MATERIALS

■    Outer fabric, 83 x 38cm (32 5/8 x 15")
■    Inner fabric, 83 x 38cm (32 5/8 x 15")
■    Wadding, 83 x 38cm (32 5/8 x 15")
■    Zip, 35cm (13 3/4")
■    Two 3cm (1 1/4") buttons
■    Two 1cm (3/8") buttons
■    Hand sewing needle
■    Sewing machine
■    Zipper presser foot
■    Pins
■    Scissors
■    Contrasting thread

1. Cut your outer and inner fabrics according to the TEMPLATES. Cut the wadding. Leave 1cm (3/8") seam allowance around each piece except for the horizontal line on the body top and body bottom. Mark the ears and centre points.

2. Sew the ears and hand strap. Place ears right sides (RS) together and add a wadding piece to the back. Pin and sew together. Fold the fabric strap in half, RS together, and sew all the way down.

3. Make a few notches on the ears and turn RS out. Turn the strap to the RS, fold it through the middle (you can use an iron to make it flat) and make a stitch line on both sides using contrast colour thread.

4. Place the zip RS up on the horizontal line of the inner fabric body top, RS up. Place outer fabric body top on top of the zip, RS down. Sew through the horizontal line with the zipper foot. Place the wadding body top piece on the back of the fabric sandwich and sew it through the horizontal line.

5. Repeat the last steps with the body bottom pieces. This will join body top and bottom with the zip and pad the body front.

6. Grab the front body you just built. Pin the ears and the hand strap in place.

7. Keeping both the inner pieces and the wadding out of the way, sew the ears and strap to the outer body top piece.

8. Place the outer fabric body back on top of the body front piece, RS together. Pin all around carefully to set the inner pieces apart. Sew the outer fabric pieces to the wadding all around. Do not sew through the zipper - we'll do this later - and leave two small gaps on either side.

9. Place the inner fabric body back on top of the body's front piece, RS together. Place the body back wadding piece on top and pin all around. Make sure it's correctly positioned and wrinkle free. Flip it over to the outer fabric side and sew the pieces all around through the stitches you made in Step 8, leaving a hand-sized gap on the bottom for turning. This time, sew through the zipper, closing the gaps left. This will join both the inner body pieces and fix the outer body to the lining.

10. Turn the piece RS out through the gap. Stitch the hole closed.

11. Open the zipper and turn the whole bag RS out.

12. Experiment with the positioning of the buttons to create a facial expression. Hand sew in place with contrasting thread.
