Free Easy Sewing Pattern + Tutorial for Felt Monster Dolls.
Standing tall at 29cm high, Grüber is ready to rock with his bushy beard and skin-tight jeans. You can make Grüber just as you see him here, or you can mix and match the extra features provided on the templates (DOWNLOAD PATTERN HERE) to make another member of his monstrous crew.
Or get creative and dream up your own monster. Once you’ve chosen a creature, it helps to arrange the design with the paper templates first. Play around with the size of the features and where you’d like to place them, then grab some felt in eye-catching colours to really make your character stand out.
MATERIALS:
- 2x felt pieces (about A4 size) for body
- Smaller pieces of felt for details
- Matching embroidery thread
- A pair of safety eyes
- Knitting needle or awl
- Polyester fibre filling
- Various trimmings such as ribbons, buckles, buttons, etc
1. Copy and trace the templates onto your felt. Carefully cut out the pieces.
2. Working on one body piece only , lay out the felt details in layers, as shown above, or until you’re satisfied with how they look . It may help to pin all of the pieces in place.
3. Take the other body piece and place the back of the jeans on it. Chalk on the pocket detail, and then embroider it on with a simple running stitch in a bright, contrasting thread. You can also embroider seam details onto the jeans . Embroider zip and pocket details onto the front jeans piece.
4. Use a simple over-stitch to make up the eyes and glasses . You can use a blanket stitch for extra fanciness . Attach Grüber ’s specs to the big piece of facial hair with a simple running stitch around the frame using black thread.
5. Noses are done separately. Blanket-stitch the two pieces together, then lightly stuff. Details such as moustaches or beards do not have to be fully stitched down to the body, just tack them on at the top – they look better when they’re left to flap around.
6. Take the plastic safety eyes and create a pair of holes through the body to place them in. You can use an awl or a knitting needle. If the hole needs to be even wider a wooden chopstick is very useful.
7. Push the eyes through the holes and secure them with the metal or plastic washer.
8. Place the rest of the details onto the body and sew the nose on from its middle area on the underside , through all the pieces.
9. Stitch the front body to the back body (including the trousers) with a blanket stitch. Leave a gap of 8cm on one outside arm. Taking your time , carefully stuff your character through the gap. Get into all the hard-to-reach areas by using a knitting needle. Blanket-stitch the gap.
10. Make a belt from ribbon or felt and add a buckle. Secure it down with small stitches. Last of all, add tattoos and hairy bits with simple running stitches. You are now the keeper of one hard-rocking felt monster !
