DIY: Headphones Pouch Tutorial

A set of headphones is a travel essential, whether we're listening to some uplifting tunes or catching up on our fave podcasts. They can get a bit caught up with all the other tat in our bags though, which is why we love this nifty little headphones pouch. It's great for storing phone cables too.

 MATERIALS
■    Nine 6.5cm (2 5/8") squares of patterned fabric
■    One 15cm (6") zip
■    One metal key ring
■    Sewing machine
■    Matching thread

1. Take four squares of fabric for the front section, and four squares for the back section. Pin and stitch together in pairs, leaving a 1cm (3/8") seam allowance. Pin two stitched pairs together make a larger square and sew into place with a 1cm (3/8") seam allowance. Press all the seams open.

2. For the front section, take a pair of squares and pin them to the zip, with the edges lined up and the right sides facing, as shown. Ensure the centre of the zip is in line with the centre of the fabric. Machine stitch close to the zip teeth, then press the fabric away from teeth.

3. Take the last pair of squares and pin them to the other edge of the zip, again with the right sides facing, and lining them up with the other pair as you go. Machine stitch close to the other zip teeth. Press the fabric away from the teeth.

4. Pin the back section to the front section, with right sides facing and matching up the seams. Draw a 10.5cm (4 1/4") circle onto the fabric.

5. Fold the two side edges of the 6.5cm (3/8") square to the centre, and then fold in half, as shown. This will give you a strip of fabric with no raw edges down the long sides. Machine stitch the long edge.

6. Fold this into a loop. Remove the pins from the stitched section, and slot the loop in between, ensuring the looped end is facing the centre and the raw edges line up with the raw edges of the front/back section. Repin to sandwich the loop in place.

7. With the zip half open, machine stitch through all the layers around the circular line. Take care when sewing over the zip teeth - you may need to use the hand wheel on your machine for this section to negotiate around the teeth. Leave a small gap at the end for turning through. Trim around the edge of the cirle, leaving a 0.5cm (1/4") seam allowance.

8. Turn the headphones pouch through to the right side, and press flat. Top stitch all the way around the outside edge (optional) in a contrasting thread, with a 0.5cm (1/4") seam allowance. Add a key ring onto the loop at the top. Open the zip, pop in your headphones and you're ready to go.
