Basically, it’s just a little zipper pouch for your little dude, or little girl to carry all her toys or crayons, or papers or whatever in. My guys love to take some cars and other toys with them when we go to the grocery store so this is a perfect way to make sure they carry their own stuff and my purse doesn’t get too heavy.
You Will Need:
2- 9 inch by 8.5 inch pieces of outer fabric
2 - 9 inch by 8.5 inch pieces of lining fabric
1 - 7.5 inch zipper
1 - 3inch by 10 inch piece of outer fabric(for the strap)
1 - 3inch by 4 inch piece of outer fabric (for the strap)
Small scrap of fabric for applique
Small piece of heat n’ bond (same size as your applique)
Sewing Machine
Iron
Pins
Small Key Ring and Swivel Clip (if you want your strap to be detachable)
Step 1:
Cut out your outer fabric pieces and lining pieces.
Step 2:
If you are doing an applique on the front, trace and cut out your shape onto a scrap piece of paper. Following the instructions on the heat n’bond, press one side onto your applique fabric. Trace or pin your shape onto your newly bonded fabric and cut out.
When you’re ready to bond your applique to the front of your pouch, peel off the paper layer and set it down where you want it. Following the heat n’bond instructions, press to adhere the shape to your fabric.
this is how it should look once you peel the paper layer off, all shiny.
Step 3:
Set your zigzag stitch to a very narrow stitch and then zigzag all the way around your applique, taking extra care at any corners or small curves.
Step 4:
Make your strap.
Fold your strap piece in half lengthwise and press.
Open it back up and fold each side in towards the middle, pressing as you go.
It should look like this.
Fold each end in towards the middle about a ¼ of an inch and press well.
Clip each side to help reduce bulk when you’re sewing it all shut.
Fold it back over along the middle fold and pin into place. Repeat the first few strap steps for the smaller piece, leaving the ends raw and not folded in.
Stitch along both sides of each strap piece.
Fold your larger strap piece in half over the ring end of your swivel clasp. Stitch in place.
Line up the ends of the long strap and stitch them together, forming a loop.
Step 5:
Sewing the zipper on.
Take your front panel of outer fabric and pin the zipper along the top, zipper face down. Using your zipper foot on your machine, stitch along the top of the zipper/front panel.
Take one of your lining pieces and line it up on top of the zipper (fabrics should be right sides together).
Side note: If you’re really brave/talented, you can just sandwich the zipper in between both fabrics and then stitch it all in one go, rather than doing it in two separate steps.
Flip your fabrics over and press along the zipper seam. Top stitch along the zipper to hold everything in place.
Repeat on the other side of the zipper.
Step 6:
Take the smaller piece of your straps and fold it in half, placing your key ring or d-ring in the middle and then stitching to secure
Take your now finished d-ring strap and pin it to one of the outer pieces of fabric. You want it about 1-2 inches from the top. Make sure your ring end faces in towards the middle.
Step 7:
Place both the outer fabrics and lining fabrics right sides together (as above photo shows) and pin it all in place.
Stitch nearly all the way around, leaving a couple of inches along the bottom of the lining fabric so you can flip it back inside out. Trim any excess fabric and all four corners.
Step 8:
Flip the whole bag right sides out through the opening you left on the lining fabric. Push the lining fabric inside the outer fabric and hand stitch the whole closed.
That’s it! Your Little Dude Toy Pouch is done!
