Jean Lined Bag Tutorial

Jean Lined Bag Tutorial

Create a quick and easy bag with recycled jeans to carry all your must-haves.

Materials:

2--8-1/4 squares of linen, canvas, or other heavy fabric
2--8-1/4 squares cut from the leg of a pair of denim jeans (we used a pair of children’s size 8 Husky)
Pearl cotton in your favorite coordinating color (we used blue)
Heavy weight needle--it needs to go through both heavy fabric & denim layer

Assemble the Purse:

1. Cut off the bottom rolled hem of your jean legs to use as the handles for your bag, each approximately 14" long. You may or may not need to use both legs.

2. Cut out one back pocket from the jeans, trimming off all of the extra fabric around the edges.

3. Machine stitch the pocket to the right side of one 8-1/4 square of fabric, in the center. Stitch over the outer stitching on the pocket.

4. With right sides together, stitch the two 8-1/4 square fabric pieces along three sides leaving the top open. Use a 3/8" seam allowance.

5. Turn the pouch right side out and pin the handles in place at either side, matching the raw edges. I lined my handles up with the inside edges of the pocket; set aside.

6. With right sides together, stitch the two 8-1/4 square denim pieces together at the sides only. Now you have a jean tube.

7. Slip jean tube over fabric bag. The right sides of the denim should be facing the right sides of the fabric.

8. Stitch across the top of the bag, catching the handles into the stitching.

9. Turn the bag right side out by pulling the jean tube up. You should now be looking at the front jean pocket with the denim tube at the top. Hand stitch or zig-zag stitch with your machine the jean opening closed.

10. Push the jean lining to the inside of the bag. Using the pearl cotton thread, stich a running stitch all the way around the top of the bag.
