Easy Sunglasses Case. Sew Tutorial

Simple enough for a first project, the Sew Easy Sunglasses Case builds basic skills and results in a lovely and useful finished product.

Sewists will practice sewing straight seams, pivoting at corners and construction of a basic lining. Change the dimensions of the fabric pieces to create larger or smaller slip cases, for e-readers, tablets or handheld devices.

Supplies:

- Outer Fabric: one 7” x 8” rectangle
- Inner (contrast) Fabric: one 8” x 8” square
- Lightweight fusible interfacing: one 7” x 7” square
- For the Loop: one 2” x 3” rectangle from Inner (contrast) fabric
- Thread, scissors, iron, pins

To Construct the Case:

1. Center the fusible interfacing on the wrong side of Inner Fabric piece, and iron according to manufacturer’s directions.

2. Place Outer Fabric piece on top of Inner Fabric piece, with right sides together. Match up one 8” edge, pin and sew with a ¼” seam. This is the top edge of your sunglasses case.

3. Press the seam flat toward the Inner Fabric section.

4. Make the Loop: Fold 2” x 3” rectangle in half lengthwise, with wrong sides together, and press well. Open out rectangle and fold top and bottom edges in to middle crease. Press. Fold again along center crease, enclosing the raw edges inside, and sew along the long edge with a 1/8” seam.

5. Fold loop in half lengthwise. On the right side of Outer Fabric, pin folded loop near the top edge, having the raw edges even with the fabric edge.

6. Fold case in half lengthwise with right sides together (loop will be enclosed inside). Match up side and bottom edges of both the Inner and Outer pieces. Pin edges.

7. Sew with a ¼” seam, starting at the bottom folded edge of the Inner fabric piece. Sew for approximately 1” and stop (back stitch). Cut thread and leave a 2” opening, then begin sewing again along the rest of the bottom and up the side of the Inner piece; continue along the side of the Outer fabric piece, and the bottom edge of the Outer piece all the way to the folded side. Trim corners.

8. Turn case to the right side by pulling the Outer fabric piece through the 2” opening that you left in the Inner piece. Push out corners firmly.

9. Press, then sew the 2” opening by hand using a whipstitch. Push the Inner piece down into the Outer piece, taking care to push out corners well. Adjust top of case to allow about ½” of the Inner fabric to show.

10. Press well. Slip in your sunglasses, and you’re done!
