A drawstring bag like this is just as quick to sew as a simple shopping bag— but it’s trendy, hip, stylish, up to date… and it’s even a bit more practical, since you can carry it on your back (great for when you’re out shopping by bike!)
So, what do you think? Would you like to sew one for yourself, too? I created a very simple sewing pattern for it:
Cut out each piece once from a sturdy cotton fabric (for example, upholstery fabric from IKEA); the seam allowance (0.8 cm) is already included.
Fold and press the small rectangles as follows:
: fold in half lengthwise
: unfold again
: fold the long sides toward the center crease you just pressed
It should then look like this; next, topstitch along both long edges, close to the edge.
Finish the edges of the large piece of fabric all the way around,
and cut two 1.80-meter lengths of cord.
Place the fabric—with its edges finished—right sides together, aligning it along the dashed line to form a 37 x 46 cm rectangle.
At the bottom corners, on both the left and right sides, insert the ribbons (which should be folded in half).
Sew the left and right sides together; in the area where the straps are attached, sew back and forth a few times to ensure they are securely fastened.
Now turn the bag right side out, press the seam allowance at the top edge open, and secure it in place with two seams, each approximately 10 cm long.
Fold the top edge over by about 1 cm and sew it in place from the inside.
Then, fold it over again by 3 cm and sew it in place from the outside; stitch back and forth over the side seam area to secure it.
You now have a casing.
Now, unpick the side seam along the top edge, up to the casing seam.
Now, thread the cord through—once from the left and once from the right.
then thread it through the attached ribbons at the bottom and tie it securely – done!
