How to Sew a Boxy Cosmetics Bag

How to Sew a Boxy Cosmetics Bag

Make a boxed corner DIY Makeup pouch bag with a lace edge zip. Easy Boxed Corner Pouch.

The lace edge zips really make these little bags very special, but many people aren’t quite sure how to insert them so here’s a wee tutorial for you so you can go lace edge zip crazy too. They are relatively quick and easy to make and will be a useful and welcome gift this Christmas.

 You will need

A lace edge zip
1 FQ or 1/4m outer fabric
1 FQ or 1/4m inner fabric
(I used a linen look cotton as they are a bit heavier)
Interfacing of your choice (I used a heavy sew in as I’m having a mini love affair with it at the moment, but you could equally use an iron on, the sew in does give a good structure to the bag)
Coordinating thread

Please note, seam allowances and measurements are tight on this bag to ensure you get the largest bag possible from the 20cm zip length so it’s important to cut, sew and mark accurately. Feel free to make your fabric pieces 1/2″ smaller all round if you find this easier and your bag will be smaller.

Method

1) Cut 2 8.5 x 7″ pieces of your outer fabric, inner fabric and interfacing (if you are using directional fabric make sure the pattern runs up and down looking at the 8.5″ side)

2) Iron on your interfacing to the wrong side of the outer fabric, or if you are using sew in then assemble your pieces in the following order, from the bottom up

    interfacing
    outer fabric face up
    lining fabric face down

Repeat for the other side.

3) Mark a line 1/2″ from each side on longer edge of fabric and sew between the marks. Repeat for the other side.

4) Cut back interfacing in the seams (this is made really easy with appliqué scissors). Repeat for the other side.

5) Press seams flat and then press the right way. Repeat for the other side.

6) Mark 1/2″ in from the edge of the both sides with a pin

7) Lay the lace edge zip on to the ride side of your fabric making sure the metal zip stopper is outside of your marking pins (this will ensure you don’t sew through it and break your needle!)

8) Sew between the marking pins (don’t sew outside of them) using your zipper foot.

9) Repeat Steps 7 & 8 for the other side (change of fabric alert as I missed a photo!)

10) Lay lining fabrics right side together and outer fabrics right sides together, Sew along the bottom of each side, leaving a turning gap of a couple of inches in the lining. Press seams flat.

11) Trim back the interfacing in the seams

12) Open the zipper pull and baste the open end of the zip closed

13) You are now going to stitch the sides. It’s important you stitch the outer fabric and lining fabrics separately.

With the lining at the bottom fabric line up your seams with the zip then pull back the outer fabric and clip or pin it out of the way. Mark your stitch line close to the fabric join.

Using your zipper for stitch as close to the join as you can.

14) Trim back the interfacing in your seams and trim back your seam allowance to 1/4″ and repeat step 13 for the outer fabric. Trim back the excess on both ends of the zip.

15) Now we can box the corners. fold each corner so it makes a triangle making sure your seam is in the centre and the triangle is even. Draw a line with a fabric pen 3/4″ from the point making sure the seam runs straight. If you would like your box bag to be “higher” you can increase the measurement. Stitch all eight corners along this line and trim back the seam allowance to 1/8″

16) Turn right side out through the turning gap in your lining

17) Stitch the turning gap in your lining closed.

18) Voila! You have your pretty cosmetics bag.
