Reversible Slouch Bag FREE Pattern & Tutorial

Reversible Slouch Bag FREE sewing pattern and tutorial. It is a great go-to bag when running out the door with a few items to pack along.

To sew the Reversible Sling Bag you will need:
• 1 yard main fabric
• 1 yard coordinating fabric
• 28 inches double folded bias tape
• basic sewing supplies

From each of the fabrics cut the following:
• (2) 21 x 19 inches – main front and back pieces
• 8 x 35 inch – long strap
• 8 x 15 inch – short strap
• 9” circle {trace a 9 inch plate and cut} – bottom piece

From the main fabric cut:
• (2) 2 x 15 inch – ties

Print out the Template A and Template B

Use a ½ inch seam unless otherwise noted.

Place Template A over the end of the 8 x 15 inch short strap, centered. Pin in place and trace. Extend the lines to the corners on the other end and cut.

Take this newly cut short strap piece and place it atop the end of the long 8 x 35 inch piece. Trace and cut. Do so for both fabrics.

Cut the top, rounding on four main pieces as follows:
Fold your main piece in half width-wise (it now measures 19 x 10.5 inches).
Place Template B on the fold at the top corner of the main piece. Pin, trace, cut.

For both the main and contrasting fabric, match up main pieces (right sides together), pin sides and sew.

Attach straps by pinning bottom edge of strap to top of main bag, when it is opened up, over the seam. Right sides together, pin in place, sew at ½ inch.
Sew the short strap on one side, and the long strap on the other.

Repeat for contrasting fabric.

To prepare the ties, press them bias-tape-style: fold in half lengthwise and press.
Open, fold the sides into the middle and press.
Fold the middle closed again, press, and stitch both closed (close to the edge).
Tie a knot in the end of each tie.

Pin ties to the top-edge of main fabric (as shown). Attach one to the front panel and one to back. Sew in place, about ¼ inch from edge.

Insert contrast bag into main bag (right sides together), lining up long and short straps. Tuck the ties inside. Pin around the top and straps and sew at about ¼ inch all the way around.

Make several little clippies around the curves with scissors, about 1/8 inch into the fabric, about 1 inch apart.

Turn bag through bottom opening, so the right sides are now on the outside. Press. Topstitch all the way around the top and straps (at about ¼ inch).

Line up the bottom edges, pin together and baste (little less than ¼ inch).
Line up and pin the two circles (wrong sides together). Baste around the edges (little less than ¼ inch).

Turn bag inside out (the contrasting fabric on the outside). 2 inches from the seam, make two 1 inch pleats, about 1 inch apart. Pin in place. Repeat for all sides (for a total of 8 pleats).

Mark 4 equidistant spots on the bottom circle. Fold in half, then fold in half again and mark a dot on the corner folds.
Mark center bottom on the front and back of the bag.
Line up the dots, on the circle, to the center and side seams on the bag. Pin circle onto bag, adjusting the pleats to fit and sew in place using ¼ inch seam.

Trim seam to between 1/8 and 1/4 inch.
Cover up the seam with bias tape. Open up the bias tape and fold over the bag’s edge about ½ inch.
Pin open side of bias tape to the edge of bag (not circle-side), all the way around. End will overlap the beginning. Stitch at ¼ inch.

Fold bias tape over seam. Pin in place and topstitch.
