Purse Bag DIY Tutorial

Purse Bag DIY Tutorial

The thing I love about leather bags, is that they are actually easy to make – easier than one would think. All you truly need is some heavy duty needles and a little man power, and you can have a cool new one-of-a-kind leather bag in no time! (Rivets help too…)

Let me show you how I made this bag, in about an hour.

Materials:

    (1) larger piece of leather
    (1) smaller piece of leather
    lining fabric
    heavy duty stabilizer
    rivets
    purse handles
    basic sewing essentials

Instructions:

Gather materials as listed above.
Cut your larger leather piece to your desired bag specs + seam allowance (double the length, as there will be no bottom seam).  Cut the smaller leather accent piece to your desired size and place on top of main leather piece in desired location. Pin in place, and sew around the edges to secure.
Now that you have your main leather exterior piece, cut (1) lining & (1) heavy duty stabilizer piece the same specs.

Fold leather in half right sides together, pin and sew side seams. Add stabilizer to the wrong side of the lining and baste around the outer edges. Fold lining in half right sides together, and sew side seams – leaving a 5″ opening along one of the sides for turning the bag later.
Trim off excess seam allowance along sides.
Turn leather exterior bag right side out. Slip lining around, matching up the side seams – so that the lining and exterior bag are both right sides together. Pin around the upper edge and sew.
Pull bag out through opening in the lining side seam. Whipstitch opening closed.

Push lining inside bag. For peek-a-boo lining along the top of the bag (like I have, almost looks like piping), simply do not push lining all the way inside. This should be easy, as stabilizer is extremely thick and will naturally push the lining up.
Now we will attach the handles. Gather your supplies, and cut (4) 1″ x 4″ leather strips.
Place handles on top of the bag in your desired location. Make small marks where you want the rivets to be.
Slip the leather strip around the bottom of your purse handle, matching up the bottom edges. Make holes using a leather hole maker thingy (terminology?) in the small leather strip, as well as on the purse where you want the rivet to be.

Using your rivets and rivet setter, following the instructions on your rivet package, attach leather strap to bag.

And you are finished!
